The French club Lens faces the risk of receiving a new penalty from the European Football Association (UEFA) due to the behavior of its fans during the match against Belgian club Club Brugge yesterday (Wednesday).
Lens, which features Saudi star Saud Abdulhamid, lost to Club Brugge with a score of three goals to nil in the third round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
The match was halted in the 30th minute due to Lens fans throwing fireworks and smoke bombs onto the pitch. According to the French network (RMC), UEFA intends to open a new disciplinary file against the French club.
The network added that UEFA does not tolerate such scenes during matches it organizes, and the penalty could be severe for Lens, whether through a financial fine or banning its fans from attending away matches.
The report clarified that the referees' decision to stop the game for a few minutes may also contribute to the severity of the penalty, noting that UEFA officials recorded these incidents in their match reports, which the Belgian authorities classified as high-risk.
This comes at a time when the club is already undergoing a disciplinary test period due to its fans igniting fireworks and throwing them onto the pitch during the match against Slavia Prague in the first round of the Champions League.
