In the blink of an eye, several professional players became clubless and without professional contracts after their clubs abandoned their services following the Saudi Football Federation's decision to reduce the number of registered players in the first-team rosters of the Roshen Saudi Professional League clubs to 25 players instead of the previous number of 30 players, while allowing each club to register 10 non-Saudi players, starting from the 2024-2025 sports season, according to the following conditions:
1- Eight non-Saudi players, with no minimum age limit specified.
2- Two non-Saudi players born in 2003 or later, aimed at enhancing the investment aspect in talents at the clubs.
3- Each club retains the right to register one professional player (born in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) who must be born in 1998 or later.
4- Each team participating in the Roshen Saudi Professional League can register a maximum of 8 non-Saudi players in the squad for each match, in addition to the professional player born in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (this does not apply to the King’s Cup and the Saudi Super Cup, where all registered non-Saudi players can participate).
The decision came after coordination with the clubs' support strategy, the national teams' management, and the technical director of the Saudi Federation, in addition to holding several workshops with the clubs.
Although the summer transfer market for the 2025 season was not filled with surprises, the surprise was the absence of many distinguished player names from appearing in the Roshen League this season, waiting for offers that may come to them in the coming period, taking advantage of a clause in FIFA that allows signing with any free player outside of the known transfer periods.
The duo Abdullah Al-Maiouf and Nawaf Al-Abed are at the top of that group of players currently not linked to any club, and it is surprising that both have significant experience and have previously represented the Saudi national team in the World Cup and several other tournaments.
Al-Maiouf entered a phase of instability after leaving Al-Hilal in the summer of 2023, having played one season for Al-Ittihad and another for Al-Shabab, with his contract with the latter ending this summer and not being renewed, while Nawaf Al-Abed is still searching for a new opportunity, which seems difficult in the Roshen League after the end of his contract with Al-Riyadh. The future of these players is currently hanging between announcing retirement or quietly withdrawing from the green rectangle, and not joining any of the Yelo League clubs, as the chance of being in the Roshen League this season is closer to impossible.
Between the option of quietly retiring or moving to one of the Yelo League clubs, the future of the duo remains uncertain until further notice.
Defender Mohammed Al-Fateel also entered the 2025-2026 season without a team, in an unexpected situation for a player like him who was linked to several clubs after the end of his contract with Al-Nassr.
Despite Al-Nassr's desire for him to continue and making an official offer to renew his contract, Al-Fateel rejected the offer due to his dissatisfaction with its financial value. Since then, his name has been proposed for transfer to more than one club, most notably Al-Shabab, but negotiations did not reach a conclusion until the transfer market closed.
Al-Fateel has the option to join Al-Dhariyah in the first division, while the opportunity to play in the Roshen League remains, especially with the need of several clubs for a Saudi defender with his experience.
Among the players included in the list are prominent names, led by Noah Al-Mousa, the former midfielder of Al-Ahli, and Sami Khaibari, the captain of Al-Fayha, who led his team to win the King’s Cup against Al-Hilal in the 2021-2022 season. The list also includes Mohammed Al-Fuhayd, one of the most prominent symbols of Al-Fateh and the owner of the historic achievement of winning the league in the 2012-2013 season and the Super Cup in 2014, as well as players such as Awad Khamis, Tarek Abdullah, Abdullah Hassoun, and Khalid Kaabi.
