The Argentine star Lionel Messi received the "Princess of Asturias" Award for Sports 2026 during a ceremony held at the Campoamor Theatre in the Spanish city of Oviedo on Friday, in the presence of King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife Queen Letizia, along with Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia, as well as Queen Mother Sofia.
Messi became the first football player to receive the award individually, in recognition of an exceptional career that has left its mark in the history of football, with an impact that transcends the boundaries of the playing field.
Exceptional Career
The jury praised the Argentine star's exceptional sports career and his continued ability to deliver outstanding performances over many years, as well as his influence in global football.
The rationale for awarding Messi, which was announced during the ceremony at the Campoamor Theatre, stated: "For being the most decorated player in the history of football, for his exceptional sports career and remarkable talent, for his ongoing solidarity work to enhance educational and healthcare opportunities for the most disadvantaged children, and for earning the respect and admiration of everyone due to his perseverance, humility, and commitment to team play, the jury has decided to award Lionel Messi."
“Turning the Extraordinary into the Ordinary”
For her part, Princess Leonor praised in her speech during the ceremony Messi's "unique and unparalleled career," recalling a distinctive description of the Argentine star's journey made by a former player of Sporting Gijón.
She said: "He has turned the extraordinary into the ordinary, through reading the game and making the most effective decisions in fractions of a second, while respecting the essence of team play and putting it above the ego."
Impact Beyond the Field
The tribute in Oviedo also highlighted the humanitarian aspect of Messi's personality, as the jury commended his struggle story, which saw him overcome growth issues he faced during his childhood, along with his perseverance, humility, and commitment to team play—values that have made him a global sports reference.
Off the field, Messi's community commitment is evident in his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010, in addition to the activities of the Lionel Messi Foundation, which aims to enhance educational and healthcare opportunities for the most disadvantaged children.
