أعلن الاتحاد النيجيري لكرة القدم، وفاة بيتر روفاي الحارس الأسطوري لمنتخب النسور الخضر، عن عمر ناهز 61 عامًا، بعد صراع مع المرض.
وجاء في بيان الاتحاد النيجيري: «خيم الحزن على سماء كرة القدم النيجيرية مساء الخميس، بعد تأكيد وفاة بيتر روفاي، حارس مرمى المنتخب الأول في بطولتي كأس العالم 1994 و1998، في لاغوس، بعد فترة مرض».
من جانبه، صرح الأمين العام للاتحاد النيجيري لكرة القدم محمد سنوسي: «إنه خبر صادم حقًا، هل حقًا توفي بيتر روفاي؟ ماذا حدث؟ لا أستطيع تصديق الأمر، لم نكن على علم حتى بأنه كان مريضًا».
بدأ روفاي مسيرته الدولية مع منتخب نيجيريا في ديسمبر 1981، في مباراة ودية، ليصبح لاحقًا أحد أبرز الأسماء في تاريخ كرة القدم النيجيرية، إذ حصل مع منتخب بلاده على المركز الثاني في كأس الأمم الأفريقية عامي 1984 و1988، قبل أن يتوج باللقب القاري في 1994 على حساب تونس في المباراة النهائية، وكان حارس المرمى الأول في البطولات الثلاث.
كما كان روفاي حارس مرمى نيجيريا في نهائيات كأس العالم 1994 و1998، حيث وصل «النسور الخضر» إلى دور الـ 16 في كلتا المناسبتين. بعد اعتزاله، كرس روفاي وقته لاكتشاف المواهب الشابة، وعمل منسقًا للمنتخب النيجيري تحت 23 عامًا.
إلى جانب مسيرته المتميزة مع منتخب نيجيريا، خاض روفاي تجارب احترافية في بلجيكا وهولندا والبرتغال وإسبانيا.
The Nigerian Football Federation announced the death of Peter Rufai, the legendary goalkeeper of the Super Eagles, at the age of 61, after a battle with illness.
The Nigerian Federation's statement read: "Sadness has cast a shadow over Nigerian football on Thursday evening, following the confirmation of Peter Rufai's death, the goalkeeper of the national team in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, in Lagos, after a period of illness."
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Football Federation, Muhammad Sanusi, stated: "This is truly shocking news. Did Peter Rufai really pass away? What happened? I can't believe it; we weren't even aware that he was ill."
Rufai began his international career with the Nigerian national team in December 1981, in a friendly match, and later became one of the most prominent names in the history of Nigerian football, as he helped his country secure second place in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984 and 1988, before winning the continental title in 1994 against Tunisia in the final match, serving as the first-choice goalkeeper in all three tournaments.
Rufai was also Nigeria's goalkeeper in the 1994 and 1998 World Cup finals, where the "Super Eagles" reached the Round of 16 on both occasions. After retiring, Rufai dedicated his time to discovering young talents and worked as a coordinator for the Nigerian under-23 national team.
In addition to his distinguished career with the Nigerian national team, Rufai had professional experiences in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
