The Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, Liverpool's player, revealed the details of the secret agreement he made with the Dutch coach Arne Slot at the start of the current season, an agreement that played a decisive role in leading the team to win the Premier League title and Salah receiving the award for the best player in the competition, in addition to the Football Writers' Association award.
Salah praised the close relationship that developed between him and the new coach, noting that the conversation was straightforward from the first day Slot took over the role, succeeding the German Jürgen Klopp. He said: “I told him frankly that with him I am capable of winning the league title, but I need to feel comfortable with the style of play.” The coach responded by confirming that he would put the player in the best conditions to show his best levels, provided he delivered the required numbers, which both parties committed to throughout the season.
Mohamed Salah scored 28 goals this season and assisted another 18, achieving a new record for the most goal contributions in a season of 38 matches in the Premier League. He is also close to breaking the record for goal contributions in a season of 42 matches, which is shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, as he only needs two goals or two assists in the final match against Crystal Palace.
In candid statements, Salah admitted that he was not confident about staying with the team at the beginning of the season, due to the club owners' policy regarding aging players, before reaching an agreement to renew his contract for two additional years with a weekly salary of around £400,000. He added: “I have always loved this club and wanted to continue with it, but I was well aware of my value, and I was waiting for the moment when both the club and I would reach a mutually satisfactory agreement, which is why the renewal took some time.”
Salah concluded his remarks by emphasizing the special relationship he shares with coach Slot and the entire team, saying: “We all worked hard, and we exchanged talks at the beginning about what I wanted and what he needed from me, and together we found the perfect formula that brought out the best in us.”
With this successful partnership, Mohamed Salah led Liverpool to achieve their 20th title in history and his second title personally since joining the team in the summer of 2017 from AS Roma, reaffirming his status as one of the most prominent stars in English and global football.
