The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, warned against dragging Lebanon into a new war to serve external interests, emphasizing that the decision of war and peace must remain exclusively in the hands of the state. He strongly condemned any interference by Lebanese individuals or groups in the internal affairs of Arab countries, particularly military activities that threaten their security and safety, referring to what the Yemeni government recently announced.
Salam's stance came after his meeting with President Joseph Aoun on Wednesday, where they discussed the general situation in the country and the region.
After the meeting, Salam stated: "In light of the dangers of renewed war in the region, I reiterate my warning against dragging Lebanon into any new reckless adventure to serve external interests and involving it in confrontations for which it cannot afford the consequences."
He added that the Lebanese, especially in the south, have paid a heavy price in terms of their lives, livelihoods, and homes, and they have the right to live in safety and to build their future away from the cycle of wars, displacement, and destruction.
The Prime Minister affirmed that protecting Lebanon is a national responsibility that requires prioritizing its supreme interests over any other considerations, and committing to ensuring that the decision of war and peace remains exclusively in the hands of the state and its constitutional institutions. He stressed that he will not accept that a fate not chosen by the Lebanese be imposed upon them, or that their homeland be turned again into a battleground for the conflicts of others; it is our duty to safeguard its sovereignty, protect its people, and make every effort to spare it a new war.
He condemned any Lebanese individuals or groups intervening in the internal affairs of Arab brothers, particularly engaging in any form of military activities that threaten the security and safety of their countries, the latest being what the Yemeni government announced.
Salam warned that these actions can only result in harm to Lebanon and the interests of its people, affirming the importance of respecting the sovereignty and security of our brothers, preventing harm to them, and looking forward to strengthening and developing our relations with them on solid foundations of mutual trust.
