As diplomatic efforts continue to contain the escalation and prevent a renewed military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, indications have emerged of a cautious Iranian openness to the proposal by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to resume direct negotiations. However, Tehran still insists on its conditions related to lifting the maritime blockade and sanctions, and it refuses to include its nuclear file at the forefront of any negotiations before addressing its demands.
Principles and General Guidelines for Negotiation
Today (Saturday), the channels "Al Arabiya" and "Al Hadath" reported, citing informed sources, that Iran is studying the U.S. proposals included in Vance's letter to the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, amid a positive atmosphere surrounding the negotiation process and expectations of a breakthrough in the coming period.
The sources indicated that Vance's proposals are receiving a response within Iran, noting that the letter included principles and general guidelines for negotiation but did not contain a complete plan. They pointed out that Tehran has formed committees to discuss the U.S. proposals regarding its nuclear program, while an Iranian delegation is in Qatar to discuss issues that require further clarifications.
According to the same sources, discussions are ongoing regarding sequential steps, and a complete proposal has not yet matured, clarifying that communication with Mohsen Rezaei and the mediators is taking place directly. The sources stated that Iran has requested guarantees regarding a permanent and comprehensive cessation of war in exchange for opening the Strait of Hormuz. They added that there are expectations for a new round of negotiations, but it is too early to determine its timing.
In his letter, Trump's deputy proposed resuming comprehensive talks and holding a direct meeting between officials from both countries, with him leading the U.S. delegation.
Cautious Pakistani Optimism
A spokesman for the Pakistani army, Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, stated yesterday (Friday) that the military institution feels "cautious optimism" regarding its mediation between Iran and the United States. The Pakistani army chief, Asim Munir, visited Tehran twice this month.
In response to a question about whether there were positive indications from the two visits, he said, "Why would the army chief, Marshal Asim Munir, visit Tehran twice if there wasn't some degree of positivity? So yes, we are definitely cautiously optimistic." He added that there are still strong parties seeking to sabotage and obstruct, as they believe that the conflict serves their interests.
Araghchi Threatens Military Strikes
For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi threatened to launch extensive military strikes that could cause damages far exceeding $100 billion in the event of a new war.
Araghchi was responding to statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his visit to South Korea.
Merz stated that Germany has a strong economic interest in ending the conflict with Iran as soon as possible, noting that rising energy prices have cost Europe alone more than $115 billion (€100 billion).
Araghchi wrote on the platform "X": "100 billion euros is nothing compared to the devastating blow that the powerful Iranian armed forces will deliver to those who dare to harm our people," considering that red lines have become a thing of the past.
