As the momentum for mediation accelerates to prevent the return of military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, Qatar has intensified its diplomatic efforts to avoid a renewal of war, with its mediation returning to Tehran in coordination with Washington, at a time when the administration of President Donald Trump is considering military options for launching large-scale strikes if political efforts fail to reach an agreement.
Positive Momentum in Talks
The Reuters agency reported on Friday that Qatari mediators have returned to Tehran to resume mediation efforts, while the Washington Post spoke of "positive momentum" in the talks that exceeds what has been witnessed in recent months, despite the continued possibilities of military escalation.
The negotiations focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial navigation in exchange for lifting the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, in addition to discussing allowing International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to visit the bombed nuclear facilities in exchange for easing some U.S. sanctions. One of the main obstacles is agreeing on the arrangement for implementing mutual concessions.
Vance's Message Opens Door for Meeting
In a notable move, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance sent a message to Iranian National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezai, confirming that avoiding U.S. strikes requires discussions regarding the nuclear file.
An American official told the Washington Post that the message emphasized the national interests of both parties, foremost among them ensuring that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons, in exchange for rebuilding its economy and maintaining its national sovereignty.
He noted the possibility of a direct meeting between Vance and Rezai if mediation efforts succeed, likely to be hosted in Doha or Istanbul.
Rezai holds increasing importance in American calculations, as U.S. intelligence considers him a pivotal figure within the Iranian system, given his influence in security institutions and his connections with Revolutionary Guard leaders and economic officials.
Trump Considers Military Options
On the other hand, Washington does not rule out a return to escalation. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper briefed Trump on Thursday about the results of the naval blockade and available military options during a meeting attended by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kin.
American reports revealed increasing military preparations in the region, including the deployment of air defenses, munitions, and additional supplies, as well as efforts to transfer a Patriot battery to Israel, in addition to more than ten U.S. military transport aircraft arriving at bases in southern Israel over the past week.
An additional group of aircraft carriers and a unit of Marines are expected to join U.S. forces in the Middle East next month.
While Doha and Islamabad are trying to translate diplomatic momentum into an agreement that halts confrontation, Washington continues to bolster its military options, in a scene that reflects a race between the negotiation track and the preparation for the possibility of resuming war.
