Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a trilateral summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next month to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Attempt to End the War
The American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" reported yesterday (Sunday) that sources familiar with the discussions said that Putin suggested the idea of meeting with Trump and Xi to discuss the future of Ukraine, in an attempt to end the war that has been ongoing for nearly four years under terms favorable to Russia. It noted that the proposal comes as part of the Russian president's efforts to capitalize on the improvement in his relationship with Trump and to push negotiations toward outcomes that serve Russian interests. The Russian proposal does not include the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, even though the anticipated meeting, if it takes place, will discuss the future of his country and the terms for ending the war. The newspaper considered that holding a summit of this kind without the presence of the Ukrainian president would be an unprecedented occurrence and could raise widespread concern in European capitals and beyond. It pointed out that the increasing rapprochement between Trump and Putin has already raised fears in Ukraine and among its allies in Washington and Europe, particularly regarding the possibility of reaching agreements that do not take Ukrainian demands into account.
Trump Criticizes Zelensky
The revelation of the proposal comes after new statements from Trump in which he emphasized that he does not want to take any steps that might push Russia away from the negotiating table regarding Ukraine. He stated in a post on his platform "Truth Social" that he is making significant progress in peace efforts, stressing his desire to keep Moscow engaged in talks. Trump harshly criticized Zelensky, accusing him of not wanting to end the war, arguing that he could have reached a better agreement two years ago. The information from "The Wall Street Journal" did not include details regarding the location of the proposed summit or whether Trump and Xi had agreed to participate. The trilateral meeting remains a Russian proposal that has not been announced as agreed upon, while the idea of discussing Ukraine's fate without the involvement of its leadership raises questions about the role of Kyiv and its European allies in any potential settlement.
