The defendant in the murder of the "Bride of Menoufia" is nearing the death penalty, after the Wadi al-Natrun Court of Appeals decided to refer his case to the Grand Mufti of Egypt to obtain a legal opinion on his execution, in a notable judicial development that has brought the case back into the spotlight.
The decision came during a session held by the court on Sunday to consider the appeal against the previous ruling that sentenced the defendant to 15 years of hard labor. The court concluded to take measures to intensify the penalty by referring the case documents to the Mufti of the Egyptian Republic in preparation for a final ruling.
The case dates back to December 2025, when the village of Mit Barrah, part of the Quesna Center in Menoufia Governorate, witnessed a crime that shocked public opinion, after the young woman Karima was found dead in her marital home, showing signs of assault.
Immediately, security forces moved to the site of the report, and the body was transferred to the morgue of Shabin al-Kom Educational Hospital, while the Public Prosecution began its investigations to uncover the circumstances of the incident, before deciding to detain the husband and refer him to criminal trial.
Investigations revealed that the victim had been married for only about four months and was three months pregnant at the time of the crime. A quarrel erupted between her and her husband, which ended with him assaulting her in a manner that cost her life and that of her unborn child.
The Shabin al-Kom Criminal Court had issued a ruling in June of last year, sentencing the defendant to 15 years of hard labor. However, the Public Prosecution appealed the ruling, leading the case to be returned to the Wadi al-Natrun Court of Appeals, which reviewed the case again and decided to refer the defendant's documents to the Mufti.
The courtroom witnessed emotional moments following the announcement of the decision, as the victim's mother broke into tears and repeated phrases of glorification, expressing her relief at the outcome of the session. She also confirmed her intention to prepare rice pudding and distribute it to the neighbors in celebration of the decision, noting that she had seen her daughter in a dream before the session, where she was announcing good news, which made her feel that her daughter's right to justice was drawing near.
