The Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, threatened to expand military operations in Lebanon and seize more territory if Hezbollah joins Iran in attacking Israel. He announced that the army is ready to carry out a "ground maneuver."
Katz stated in remarks from within Lebanese territory today (Wednesday) that "Hezbollah will receive a severe blow," and that areas in Nabatieh and Litani will become part of what he described as Israel's "permanent security zone." He vowed to evacuate residents north to the first line and Zahrani, and to clear most of the southern suburbs of Beirut in preparation for targeting infrastructure.
He pointed out that these operations will lead to the displacement of more than a million people within Lebanon.
Katz confirmed that Israel will not withdraw from the areas it controls in Lebanon and Syria, which it calls "security zones," considering that the military presence there aims to protect the residents of Galilee and the Golan. He issued a threat to Hezbollah's Secretary-General Naim Qassem, hinting at targeting him similarly to his predecessor Hassan Nasrallah.
Katz inspected the villages along the confrontation line and listened to a briefing from commanders regarding Operation "Silver Plow," which the Israeli army claims aims to destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure in the area.
In April, the Israeli Defense Minister announced the launch of Operation "Silver Plow" in southern Lebanon, aimed at destroying homes and facilities that Israel claims Hezbollah uses as sites for launching anti-tank missiles and conducting attacks on Israeli forces and border areas.
In September, the Israeli army announced the destruction of Hezbollah infrastructure in the Al-Tahir Heights near Nabatieh, stating that the operation aimed to reinforce the security zone around the site, while confirming the continued presence of its forces to prevent the party from rebuilding its capabilities there, according to Reuters.
