Hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a "energy truce" between Moscow and Kyiv, the Russian presidency, "the Kremlin," rejected confirming the validity of an agreement with Ukraine to stop mutual targeting of energy facilities. It announced that it prefers to work towards a "lasting peace" with Ukraine instead of a ceasefire.
Europe is not part of the "Peace Party"
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to reporters today (Monday) that "communications are ongoing, and as soon as we have something to say about this matter, we will make sure to inform you."
In response to a question regarding Kyiv's call for a comprehensive ceasefire for 60 days to allow for elections, he said, "We do not want a ceasefire; we want long-term peace." Peskov announced that Europe is not part of the "Peace Party" seeking to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but rather a "War Party" doing its utmost to prolong the crisis. He indicated that Russia is not seeking to create a divide between the United States and Europe but is looking for solutions that allow for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
Trump announces a surprising agreement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the "This Week" program on ABC yesterday (Sunday): "Please tell Putin: give us two months, 60 days of complete ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organize elections." Trump unexpectedly announced on Sunday an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to immediately stop targeting oil refineries in both countries. This development came just twenty-four hours after Trump called for the resignation of the Ukrainian president and less than 48 hours after his agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow to supply diesel to American and global markets in exchange for lifting some sanctions on Russia. Trump wrote in a post on the "Truth Social" platform that the two sides reached an agreement, stating, "As of now, there is a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties agreed to that. Do not violate it!"
Zelensky agrees with conditions
Although Zelensky said he was surprised by the announcement, he expressed willingness to agree to the American proposal, provided that the truce is mutual and has "real guarantees," meaning punitive measures against Moscow by Kyiv's allies, including Washington, according to the British newspaper "The Guardian." He stated to Axios: "If President Trump has negotiated with Putin, let us know when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and will accept it." Zelensky previously rejected Washington's call for Kyiv to stop bombing Russian oil refineries, stating that Moscow must first end its attacks on energy infrastructure in his country.
