The Iranian authorities executed a man today, Saturday, who was convicted of charges including shooting at police officers during anti-government protests earlier this year.
Siavash Jamshidi was accused of targeting security personnel during the protests that erupted in late December due to rising living costs, which quickly turned into widespread anti-government demonstrations peaking on January 8 and 9. Since then, the number of arrests and executions in Iran has increased, whether related to the war or the protests.
According to the judiciary, Jamshidi was sentenced to death for the crime of "moharebeh" (waging war against God) through... shooting, as well as conspiracy and collusion against national security, according to their statement.
For its part, the "Mizan Online" website, affiliated with the judiciary, reported that Jamshidi was also convicted of crimes unrelated to the protests, including fraud, threats, theft, and possession and carrying of illegal military weapons.
Other charges included complicity in a kidnapping, brandishing a weapon for intimidation, and causing intentional bodily harm. The website noted that Jamshidi was active during the protests in December of last year.
During these protests, Iranian authorities announced that more than three thousand people were killed, most of them security personnel, attributing the violence to "terrorist acts" orchestrated by the United States and Israel, while NGOs based outside Iran assert that security forces fired on protesters, pointing to thousands of deaths.
In 2025, Iran executed at least 1,639 people, the highest annual total since 1989, according to the organizations "Human Rights in Iran" and "Together Against the Death Penalty."
According to Amnesty International, Iran ranks second in the world in terms of the number of executions.
