Pakistani and Indian media announced that the Indian border guards opened fire on Pakistani citizens, killing two of them near the border between the two countries in the Punjab region yesterday (Friday), leading to heightened tensions between the two countries after a year and a half of retreating from the brink of war in the disputed Kashmir region.
Pakistani television reported from security sources that three unarmed civilians from the Kasur area of eastern Pakistan stepped over one of the border markers by a few steps before Indian border security personnel opened fire on them.
It added that the gunfire resulted in the death of two of them while a third was injured, according to the Associated Press.
While there was no immediate comment from New Delhi, Indian media provided a different account, stating that the three men were suspected of attempting to enter Indian territory.
Pakistani security sources told the official radio that "none of the three individuals attempted to cross the border fence," considering the incident a violation of the border agreement and the standard operating procedures governing the international border between Pakistan and India.
Pakistan and India have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947, two of which were over Kashmir. The region, located in the Himalayas, is divided between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, both of which claim full sovereignty over it.
In April 2025, militants killed 26 tourists in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir in an attack for which New Delhi held Islamabad responsible.
The attack led to weeks of escalating confrontations, including missile and drone strikes, pushing India and Pakistan into the most dangerous military confrontation between them in decades.
Despite the exchange of gunfire between India and Pakistan across the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region in recent years, the international border in the Punjab region has remained largely quiet.
