The European Union today (Saturday) called on Washington to reconsider its decision not to grant visas to Palestinian officials to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, expressing regret for this decision for the second consecutive year.
The spokesperson for the European Commission, Anwar Al-Anouni, said: "In light of its agreements with the United Nations and its commitments as a host country, we urge the United States to reconsider this decision."
The U.S. State Department announced (on Wednesday) that it would extend the measures prohibiting the issuance of visas to Palestinian Authority officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization before the convening of the United Nations General Assembly. This step comes ahead of the participation of leaders of countries and governments in the high-level week of the 81st session of the General Assembly, which began on September 8, while the general debate continues until September 28, according to the official UN schedule.
The United States had announced in August 2025 the rejection or cancellation of visas for about 80 Palestinian officials, including President Abbas, considering that the decision was based on national security considerations.
The U.S. refusal to grant a visa to a Palestinian leader to participate in United Nations meetings dates back to 1988, when the United States denied entry to the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and the General Assembly held its meetings that year in Geneva, where Arafat delivered his speech.
