وجّه الرئيس النيجيري بولا تينوبو، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، الجيش والجهات الأمنية الأخرى بتنفيذ عملية إنقاذ فورية، بعد أن اختطف مسلحون أعداداً كبيرة من الأشخاص في ولاية النيجر، الواقعة في وسط شمال البلاد، الأسبوع الماضي.
ونددت الرئاسة بالهجوم ووصفته بأنه عمل جبان، وتعهدت بتقديم المسؤولين عنه إلى العدالة، وذلك بعد أن عرضت جماعة مسلحة مقطع فيديو عبر "فيسبوك"، يظهر ما قال السكان إنهم نحو 600 من النساء والأطفال وكبار السن، اختُطفوا خلال هجوم على مسجد في الولاية.
وقال تينوبو في بيان: «الإرهاب لن يرهب نيجيريا، سندافع عن شعبنا ونحمي مجتمعاتنا ونحافظ على قدسية الحياة البشرية»، كما أصدر توجيهات إلى قادة الأجهزة الأمنية بتقديم تقارير دورية عن الجهود المبذولة لإنقاذ المختطفين والكشف عن مصير جميع من اختُطفوا.
وأكدت مسؤولة من منطقة بورغو، التي وقع فيها الهجوم، أن 30 شخصاً قتلوا ودُفنوا يوم الأحد.
وذكرت المسؤولة أن سكان قرى داكيرا وجيدان-زانا وسابون جيدا تضرروا من الهجوم.
بدوره، قال أبو بكر عمر، أحد وجهاء داكيرا، إن ما لا يقل عن ألفي شخص فروا إلى جمهورية بنين المجاورة بعد الهجوم.
وتقوم عصابات إجرامية مدججة بالسلاح بغارات متكررة على القرى والمدارس والطرق السريعة، وتحتجز المدنيين كرهائن لأسابيع أو أشهر، بينما تطالب بفدى ضخمة، كما وسعت عملياتها بصورة متزايدة إلى ما وراء معاقلها المعتادة في الشمال.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu directed the military and other security agencies today (Tuesday) to carry out an immediate rescue operation after armed men kidnapped a large number of people in Niger State, located in the north-central part of the country, last week.
The presidency condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act, and pledged to bring those responsible to justice, after an armed group posted a video on "Facebook" showing what residents said were around 600 women, children, and elderly people who were kidnapped during an attack on a mosque in the state.
Tinubu stated in a statement: "Terrorism will not intimidate Nigeria; we will defend our people, protect our communities, and uphold the sanctity of human life." He also issued directives to security agency leaders to provide regular reports on the efforts being made to rescue the hostages and to reveal the fate of all those who were kidnapped.
A local official from the Borgu area, where the attack occurred, confirmed that 30 people were killed and buried on Sunday.
The official mentioned that residents of the villages of Dakira, Jidan-Zana, and Sabon Gida were affected by the attack.
For his part, Abubakar Umar, a local elder from Dakira, stated that at least two thousand people fled to neighboring Benin Republic after the attack.
Armed criminal gangs are conducting repeated raids on villages, schools, and highways, holding civilians hostage for weeks or months while demanding huge ransoms, and have increasingly expanded their operations beyond their usual strongholds in the north.
