The European Union recorded a trade deficit in goods with countries outside the bloc amounting to 21.8 billion euros during the second quarter of 2026, marking the first quarterly deficit of its kind since the second quarter of 2023.
The European statistics office "Eurostat" clarified today that the EU's imports of goods reached 701.8 billion euros between April and June, compared to exports worth 680 billion euros, after imports rose by 9.9% compared to the previous quarter, outpacing the growth of exports at 5.4%.
Surplus in Machinery and Vehicles
This shift is primarily linked to the widening deficit in energy products, which increased from 71.3 billion euros in the first quarter to 101.1 billion euros in the second quarter, alongside a rise in the deficit of raw materials from 7.9 to 9.4 billion euros. The EU's surplus in the machinery and vehicles sector decreased from 24.9 to 23.2 billion euros, while the surplus in chemical products rose from 47.1 to 54 billion euros, and in food and beverages from 10.7 to 11.5 billion euros.
Rising Energy Costs
The European Union had maintained a positive trade balance since the third quarter of 2023, following a period of deficit that extended from late 2021 to mid-2023 due to the sharp rise in energy costs. "Eurostat" indicated that exports and imports had recorded a downward trend since the second quarter of 2025, in a context characterized, among other factors, by escalating trade tensions.
