U.S. President Donald Trump announced today that the United States has incurred an average loss of $60 billion annually in its trade with Canada over the past ten years, asserting that this situation "will not continue."
Trump stated in two posts on his platform "Truth Social": "Canada has been taking advantage of the United States for decades," accusing it of imposing tariffs of up to 400% on American farmers, in addition to measures he claimed have caused many American companies to exit the market.
Special Treatment
Trump pointed out that Canada has refused for 10 years to approve one company’s American planes until he personally intervened, accusing Ottawa of trying to grant a full market share to a Canadian competitor of the company.
The American president said, "I deal with many countries, and Canada is easily the hardest and most unreasonable," adding that Canada acts as if it deserves special treatment, but it "is not a U.S. state, and will not receive that treatment anymore."
Escalating Tensions
Trump's remarks come at a time when trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa have escalated, after the U.S. administration imposed a 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada announced similar retaliatory measures. Trump also threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian cars, trucks, and auto parts starting January 2027.
Trump had threatened in January to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian planes, following accusations that Canada refused to approve American planes.
