Standard Missile-3 Block IIA (SM-3 IIA).
The U.S. Department of Defense, known as the Pentagon, announced today (Friday) in collaboration with Boeing and RTX, two major agreements to increase the production of key components for the Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 IB) missiles, along with increasing the production of components for the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA (SM-3 IIA) missiles.
The two agreements will contribute to enhancing the production of a series of vital interceptor missiles, which are launched from ships and used for air defense, forming a core element of the Aegis ballistic missile defense system, and represent the backbone of U.S. naval missile defense.
Michael P. Duffy, the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, stated that these agreements ensure that our fighting forces receive the munitions they need to achieve victory. We are working to stabilize supply chains, expand munitions production, and establish the entire defense industrial base on a war-ready footing.
Production rates for the SM-3 Block IIA and SM-3 Block IB missiles, which are a fundamental pillar of the U.S. missile defense system, are expected to accelerate, with Boeing leading the manufacturing of the components. This move will expedite the transition of missiles from production lines in factories to the U.S. naval fleet.
The Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding the status of the U.S. weapons stockpile on July 31, during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David.
The total defense budget requested by the Trump administration for the upcoming fiscal year reached a record $1.5 trillion, including tens of billions of dollars for missile manufacturing; however, the proposal has stalled due to Democratic objections to this massive increase, leaving the Pentagon without a clear plan to replenish its vital arsenal.
This week, the American Enterprise Institute released a report addressing the U.S. military's efforts to increase the production of vital munitions. It stated that the Pentagon's plans rely, in some cases, on fundamental assumptions, including achieving a significant increase in the production capacity of defense industry factories.
The report noted that replenishing the interceptor missiles of the THAAD high-altitude air defense system, which were used during the war, could take years. These missiles are used to intercept ballistic missiles, and the Washington Post previously reported that U.S. forces used hundreds of them during the war.
The current maximum production capacity of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency is 96 missiles per year, while the Pentagon is requesting 857 missiles in the defense budget for the coming year, and about 2,600 missiles in total over the next five years.
The institute clarified that producing 2,600 missiles at the current rate of 96 missiles per year would take about 27 years, meaning that meeting the Pentagon's demand over five years requires a significant increase in current production capacity.
