In a video posted on his official Facebook page over the weekend, former Prime Minister of Mali Moussa Mara announced his release from prison, after nearly a year of detention due to his criticism of the ruling military authorities.

The Malian judiciary had issued a ruling in October 2025 sentencing Mara to one year in prison, with another year suspended, after he was convicted for a social media post in which he criticized the restrictions imposed by the military government on the democratic path in the country.

Mara was arrested in August 2025 and faced charges of "undermining the credibility of the state" and "spreading false information"; these charges drew criticism from human rights organizations that considered them aimed at restricting freedom of expression.

The legal actions came after a post Mara published in July 2025, in which he expressed solidarity with several government critics who had been arrested, leading to his being summoned multiple times for questioning before he was officially detained.

Moussa Mara is considered one of the prominent political figures who continued to publicly criticize the military council led by Assimi Goïta, which took power following a series of military coups, at a time when Mali is experiencing increasing repression of opposition and political activity.
