The Saudi Project Masam for Mine Clearance in Yemen announced today (Thursday) the destruction of 5,977 pieces of unexploded ordnance, mines, and explosives left over from the war in the Bab al-Mandab area of Taiz Governorate in western Yemen, as part of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to reduce the risks threatening civilians.
The project clarified in a statement that the destruction process included 142 shells of various types, 2,758 detonators, 2,998 assorted munitions, in addition to 14 anti-personnel mines, 36 anti-tank mines, 9 hand grenades, 6 rockets, 8 improvised explosive devices, and 6 mortar shells, after completing all approved technical safety procedures.

Engineer Adeb Rajab, the leader of the second special operations team in the Masam project, confirmed that this quantity represents the total collected by the project teams over the past month from various areas along Yemen's western coast, indicating that the mine clearance teams retrieved these remnants from villages, farms, and grazing lands, as they posed a direct threat to the lives of civilians, especially children, farmers, and shepherds.
The leader, who supervised his team's destruction operation, pointed out that it was carried out according to precise technical procedures, starting with digging a deep pit and preparing it to accommodate the munitions, before stacking them in successive layers, explaining that the final operation included 8 layers of war remnants.
Rajab said: Small-sized munitions are placed in the lower layers, while highly explosive materials are placed on top, ensuring sufficient explosion to completely destroy all remnants and prevent any parts from remaining that could pose a future danger. He urged citizens in the western coastal areas not to approach any suspicious objects or war remnants or attempt to move or tamper with them, due to the significant danger they represent to lives.

The leader of the second special operations team called on residents to immediately report any war remnants to the Masam project teams or to security agencies and local authorities, to ensure they are handled safely and to protect civilians from the dangers of mines and unexploded munitions.
The Masam project continues to carry out mine clearance operations and destroy war remnants in several Yemeni governorates, amid the ongoing spread of unexploded munitions in vast areas, which pose a continuous threat to the population and daily life.
It is worth noting that the Masam project for mine clearance in Yemen does not limit its work to clearing mines and dismantling explosive devices and booby traps, but also conducts awareness operations for civilians in several cities and rural villages in various liberated Yemeni governorates, which enhances citizens' awareness of the dangers of this scourge on their lives and spares them the tragedies that have afflicted thousands of families over the past years due to the Houthi militia turning lands, roads, mountains, schools, public and private facilities, beaches, and seas in Yemen into minefields that target civilians, shepherds, students, fishermen, and drivers of cars and motorcycles.
