وسط توقعات بأن يواجه أسئلة مكثفة بشأن الجهود الدبلوماسية المتعثرة لإدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، يستجوب الكونغرس، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو في جلسة علنية للمرة الأولى منذ اندلاع حرب إيران.
وذكرت وسائل إعلام غربية أن السيناتور الجمهوري السابق روبيو سيشارك في جلستي استماع متتاليتين أمام لجان بمجلسي النواب والشيوخ، لتقديم طلب الميزانية السنوية لوزارة الخارجية، لكن من المرجح أن يتحول التركيز إلى وقف إطلاق النار الهش بين واشنطن وطهران، الذي تعرض لاختبارات جديدة في الأيام الأخيرة مع تبادل الهجمات بين الجانبين.
وكان روبيو قد شارك في 28 فبراير، بعد أيام من الضربات الأمريكية-الإسرائيلية الأولى، في إحاطة سرية للمشرعين، لكن هذا الاستجواب يُعد أول شهادة علنية للوزير أمام الكونغرس.
ويدافع أعضاء في الإدارة الأمريكية، بينهم روبيو، عن قرار ترمب إطلاق الحرب، رغم تعهدات سابقة بعدم الانخراط في «حروب لا تنتهي» في الشرق الأوسط.
ومن المنتظر أن يعود روبيو إلى الكونغرس، الأربعاء، للإدلاء بشهادته أمام لجنة الشؤون الخارجية بمجلس النواب، ولجنة الاعتمادات المقابلة في مجلس الشيوخ، كما من المتوقع أن يُسأل عن تصاعد موقف الإدارة الأمريكية تجاه كوبا، بعدما لمّح ترمب إلى أن الجزيرة قد تكون الهدف الأمريكي التالي بعد انتهاء العمليات في إيران.
وكانت نائبة وزير الخارجية الكوبي جوزفينا فيدال قد حذّرت من أن خطر شن عملية عسكرية أمريكية على الجزيرة آخذ في الازدياد، مع ركود المفاوضات بين البلدين رغم سلسلة لقاءات بين مسؤولين أمريكيين وكوبيين.
Amid expectations that he will face intense questions regarding the faltering diplomatic efforts of President Donald Trump's administration, Congress is questioning U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio today (Tuesday) in a public session for the first time since the outbreak of the Iran war.
Western media reported that former Republican Senator Rubio will participate in two consecutive hearings before committees in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to present the annual budget request for the State Department, but the focus is likely to shift to the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, which has faced new tests in recent days with exchanges of attacks between the two sides.
Rubio had participated on February 28, just days after the first U.S.-Israeli strikes, in a closed briefing for lawmakers, but this questioning is considered his first public testimony before Congress.
Members of the U.S. administration, including Rubio, are defending Trump's decision to launch the war, despite previous pledges not to engage in "endless wars" in the Middle East.
Rubio is expected to return to Congress on Wednesday to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the corresponding Appropriations Committee in the Senate, and he is also expected to be questioned about the administration's escalating stance toward Cuba, after Trump hinted that the island could be the next U.S. target after operations in Iran conclude.
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal warned that the risk of a U.S. military operation against the island is increasing, with negotiations between the two countries stagnating despite a series of meetings between U.S. and Cuban officials.
