أعلنت مسؤولة السياسة الخارجية في الاتحاد الأوروبي، كايا كالاس، أن بعثة الاتحاد الأوروبي البحرية «أسبيدس» في البحر الأحمر والخليج والمحيط الهندي ستُعزَّز بسفن إضافية.
وقالت كالاس في بيان، عقب اجتماع عبر الاتصال المرئي مع وزراء خارجية أوروبيين، إن بعثة «أسبيدس» شهدت ارتفاعاً حاداً في طلبات الحماية، مضيفة: «سنُعزّزها بسفن إضافية لتعزيز الأمن البحري في المنطقة».
وأشارت إلى أنها تعتزم عقد اجتماع مع دول الخليج.
وكانت المهمة البحرية الأوربية «أسبيدس» قد دعت سفن الشحن في البحر الأحمر وخليج عدن لتوخي الحذّر، من احتمالية حدوث هجمات بحرية ضمن تداعيات الهجمات التي تشنها أمريكا وإسرائيل على إيران.
وقالت المهمة على حسابها في منصة «إكس،»: «ندعو قطاع الشحن إلى توخي الحذر والوعي بأنه لا يمكن استبعاد وقوع هجمات على جميع أنواع الشحن»، مؤكدة أن أصولها في منطقة العمليات، ستبقى في حالة تأهب قصوى، وهي على أهبة الاستعداد للمساهمة في حدود إمكانياتها وقدراتها لحماية الأرواح في البحر. وحماية الملاحة الدولية في أحد أهم الممرات التجارية البحرية وأكثرها عرضة للخطر.
وكانت المهمة البحرية الأوروبية، قد أعلنت إكمالها 23 شهراً من العمليات، وأن وحداتها الحربية وفّرت الحماية والدعم الوثيق لأكثر من 1450 سفينة تجارية أثناء عبورها الجزء الجنوبي من البحر الأحمر، الذي شهد هجمات متكررة على حركة الشحن الدولي.
The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, announced that the EU naval mission "Aspides" in the Red Sea, Gulf, and Indian Ocean will be reinforced with additional ships.
Borrell stated in a statement following a video conference with European foreign ministers that the "Aspides" mission has seen a sharp increase in requests for protection, adding: "We will reinforce it with additional ships to enhance maritime security in the region."
He indicated that he intends to hold a meeting with Gulf countries.
The European naval mission "Aspides" had warned shipping vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to exercise caution due to the potential for maritime attacks as a consequence of the attacks being carried out by the U.S. and Israel on Iran.
The mission stated on its account on the "X" platform: "We urge the shipping sector to exercise caution and be aware that attacks on all types of shipping cannot be ruled out," emphasizing that its assets in the operational area will remain on high alert and are ready to contribute within their capabilities to protect lives at sea and safeguard international navigation in one of the most critical and vulnerable maritime trade routes.
The European naval mission had announced the completion of 23 months of operations, and that its war units provided protection and close support to more than 1,450 commercial vessels while transiting the southern part of the Red Sea, which has witnessed repeated attacks on international shipping movements.
