مجلس الجامعة العربية يُحذر من مخاطر الانتشار النووي في الشرق الأوسط

The Council of the League of Arab States at the level of Foreign Ministers, at the conclusion of its regular session (164), chaired by the UAE, emphasized the seriousness of the threats posed by nuclear weapons and unregulated nuclear programs to Arab national security and international peace.

The Council stressed in its resolution the necessity of declaring the Middle East a zone free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction, and subjecting all nuclear facilities and programs in the region to the comprehensive safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), indicating that Israel's refusal to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons represents a direct threat to regional stability.

The Council expressed its support for Arab efforts within the International Atomic Energy Agency, clarifying the importance of coordinating Arab positions in the Agency's meetings and unifying the stance calling for the Israeli nuclear program to be subjected to full international oversight, urging the international community to pressure Israel to comply with international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.

The Council affirmed the continuation of joint Arab work to prepare for upcoming international conferences related to nuclear disarmament, including the conference concerning the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East scheduled to be held in New York in 2025, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty conference scheduled for 2026, emphasizing the importance of Arab coordination to ensure support for a unified position in these international forums.

The Council called on the relevant international organizations to compel Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and to provide technical support to Arab countries to develop their capabilities in the field of nuclear security and to address radiological threats, while also praising the efforts of the Committee of Senior Arab Officials in following up on this vital file and providing periodic reports on its developments.

The Council tasked the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States with continuing to coordinate Arab efforts in this regard and to submit comprehensive reports on developments related to the Israeli nuclear file and international efforts for nuclear disarmament in the Middle East to the Council at its next session.
