The Syrian Ministry of Interior thwarted an attack aimed at detonating a church in the coastal city of Tartus and arrested two elements from the remnants of the former regime.
The ministry stated in a statement today (Wednesday) that the special tasks unit managed, through a well-planned ambush, and after monitoring and surveillance, to arrest two individuals belonging to one of the lawless groups linked to the remnants of the former regime, who were on their way to carry out a terrorist operation at St. Elias Maronite Church in the village of Khreibat in the Safita area of Tartus countryside.
The ministry published photos of what was found with the detainees, including an explosive device, papers bearing threats and warnings, as well as a flag of the terrorist organization ISIS.
Last June, the Douala area in the Syrian capital Damascus witnessed a terrorist attack targeting St. Elias Church, resulting in the deaths of about 25 people, after an armed assailant stormed the place and opened fire on the worshippers, followed by another assailant as well. The Ministry of Interior revealed at the time that the attackers had come from Al-Hol camp through the desert to carry out their crime. It confirmed that they belonged to ISIS. It announced the arrest of one of the individuals while on his way to carry out another suicide bombing at the shrine of Sayyida Zainab in the Damascus countryside.
Since the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024, Syria has been facing security complexities, especially with the presence of many remnants of the regime.
