The Israeli army announced that it killed a member of the Lebanese Hezbollah, accusing him of being involved in "directing" groups in Syria to launch shells towards the Golan Heights, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
The army stated in a statement today (Wednesday) that one of its aircraft "attacked last night (Tuesday) in the Bekaa region east of Lebanon and eliminated the supported Hossam Qassem Ghorab," noting that the latter had directed cells in Syria to launch rocket shells towards the Golan Heights.
Hezbollah had opened what it called a "support front" for the Gaza Strip following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, and the escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli border continued for about a year, turning into an open confrontation starting from late September 2024.
The two sides reached a ceasefire agreement on November 27, but Israel continued to carry out airstrikes in several Lebanese areas, particularly in the south and the Bekaa, and maintained its forces in five Lebanese heights near the border.
The Lebanese government held a session yesterday (Tuesday) that concluded with assigning the army to develop an implementation plan to withdraw the party's weapons before the end of this year.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced the cabinet's assignment to the army to develop an implementation plan to limit the weapons before the end of the year and present it to the council before the end of this month.
He indicated that the cabinet decided to continue discussions on the American paper, affirming at the same time Lebanon's right to defend itself in the event of any aggression.
For his part, Lebanese Information Minister Paul Marqas announced the withdrawal of two ministers representing "Hezbollah" and "Amal Movement" from the session, pointing out their disagreement with the cabinet's decision regarding the limitation of weapons.
Marqas said during a press conference: "The two ministers Tamara Al-Zein and Rakan Nasser Al-Din withdrew from the session due to their disagreement with the cabinet's decision," indicating that the cabinet set a deadline until the end of the year to unify the weapons in the hands of the Lebanese state.
