The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced today (Saturday) the arrest of Nabil Dreyousi, accused of committing war crimes and serious violations during his service in the ranks of Bashar al-Assad's regime, in a security operation carried out by the Internal Security Forces in Latakia province. It clarified that Dreyousi was involved in military campaigns during which serious violations against civilians were committed, including mutilation of the victims' bodies and violations of human rights.
The statement indicated that the detainee was handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Directorate to continue investigations and take the necessary legal actions against him, affirming the ongoing security efforts to pursue those involved in committing crimes against civilians.
It pointed out that it would not be lenient with anyone proven to have participated in committing violations in recent years, stating that the law will take its course in holding the perpetrators accountable according to the proper procedures.
Syrian security forces in Latakia province had previously announced the arrest of one of Bashar al-Assad's regime members, known as the "Assad Sniper." It was indicated that Muhammad Dawood Nasser, nicknamed the "Assad Sniper," served as a sniper in the former regime's forces and killed dozens of Syrians.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior mentioned that Dawood operated in the Turkman Mountains area, then moved to the village of Al-Zawaika in the Kurdish Mountains overlooking the Kabina Mountains, and his crimes included mutilation of bodies.
It confirmed that he was among the leaders and planners of the coastal events that witnessed bloody infighting and sectarian purges against members of the Alawite sect in the coastal cities of Syria.
According to the Ministry of Interior's statement, the accused is involved in terrorist activities, as he was responsible for targeting security checkpoints and military positions, in addition to being the leader of the group that attacked the Al-Zubar checkpoint in the countryside of Latakia province on the road leading to the Turkman Mountains.
Activists circulated on social media platforms images of Dawood during the Assad era, with his sniper rifle, and he appeared in some photos while mutilating the bodies of those he killed.
