The U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barak, confirmed today (Tuesday) that efforts are underway for a de-escalation in Syria, explaining that the recent clashes in the south of the country are "concerning."
Barak wrote in a post on his account on "X": "We are actively engaged with all components in Syria with the aim of moving towards de-escalation," adding, "The recent clashes in Sweida are concerning for all parties, and we are trying to reach a peaceful and comprehensive outcome for the Druze, the Bedouin tribes, the Syrian government, and the Israeli forces."
He pointed out that weak communication represents the biggest challenge in ensuring the peaceful and thoughtful integration of each party's interests, noting that Washington is conducting direct, active, and fruitful discussions with all parties to move towards calm and integration.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara today tasked regulatory bodies with taking immediate action against anyone who has committed any violations, regardless of their rank, following the events that took place in the city of Sweida in the south of the country. He emphasized in a presidential statement published by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) the necessity of adherence and preventing any form of violations in all public and military sectors.
For its part, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that the Israeli attacks on the south of the country have resulted in the deaths of several members of the army and security forces, in addition to civilians. The ministry clarified in a statement that the attacks came at a calculated timing and in a suspicious context aimed at destabilizing national stability and undermining Syrian unity at a critical moment when the state is striving to establish security and recover from the effects of the war.
The ministry mentioned that the Syrian state is keen on protecting all Syrians without exception, especially the Druze community, calling on the people of Sweida province to stand united behind their state and army and to reject being drawn into any suspicious projects or chaotic calls.
