The Iraqi authorities launched a wide-ranging security operation today (Sunday) in the "Qara Chogh" mountains, northwest of Kirkuk province, following reports of movements by ISIS elements in the area over the past few days.
An Iraqi source announced that joint forces from the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga began executing a large-scale combing operation in the Qara Chogh mountain range, which is considered one of the rugged areas used by the terrorist organization's members as a safe haven for their movements.
He added that the operation was based on accurate intelligence information confirming the presence of suspicious activity and movements of the organization's cells, as well as the monitoring of some hideouts and tunnels believed to be used by ISIS members for shelter.
According to the source, the military operation aims to pursue the remnants of the organization, destroy their hideouts, and thwart any attempts to reactivate their activities in those rugged mountainous areas, emphasizing that coordination between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga was conducted jointly under the supervision of security operations rooms.
The Qara Chogh mountains, extending between Kirkuk and Erbil provinces, are among the most important areas that occasionally witness military operations due to the attempts of the organization's remnants to exploit the area's ruggedness to launch sporadic attacks on villages and security forces.
