In a serious development, French police raided the headquarters of the National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, which is the largest opposition party in France, and seized documents related to the financial accounts of several party leaders.
The raid came amid accusations against Le Pen of embezzling public funds, following her appeal last spring against a previous prison sentence and her disqualification from running for office.
In his first comment, the president of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, stated that what the party is experiencing is unprecedented in the history of the Fifth Republic, describing it as a serious development for pluralism and democratic alternation. He noted that what is happening comes a year after what he called "the theft of the elections through lies." Bardella added that the judicial authorities now possess all the files related to the electoral campaigns that the party has participated in, whether presidential, legislative, or municipal.
Le Pen, 56, who has run for the presidency three times, is one of the prominent candidates in the elections, and she has been barred from running for public office for five years after being convicted by the court along with some party members last March on charges of embezzlement.
Le Pen and party officials were accused of using European Union funds to pay the salaries of National Rally employees in France.
After being sentenced to prison and fined, Le Pen, a long-time banner holder of the far-right in France, was immediately prohibited from running for public office for five years, pending the outcome of her appeal. She hopes that her appeal will be considered quickly, and that the ruling will be overturned or modified, allowing her to run for office.
