The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced today (Saturday) the arrest of leaders in Bashar al-Assad's regime involved in war crimes against civilians over the past years, confirming that the Internal Security Forces in Latakia province, in cooperation with the Anti-Terrorism Branch, arrested Anwar al-Rihan and his father, Adel Ahmad al-Rihan, according to the Syrian News Agency (SANA).
The agency quoted the Ministry of Interior as saying: "The criminals are known for their connections to sectarian militias and have a long record of violations, starting from suppressing peaceful protests in the city of Jisr al-Shughur, launching raids and executions against the revolutionaries, and committing numerous crimes in the coastal area," indicating that the arrested suspects were involved in the Bayda massacre in 2013, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, and ending with their participation in supporting Assad's regime campaigns in southern Idlib.
The ministry pointed out that the suspects were referred to the relevant judicial authorities to take the necessary legal actions against them.
Meanwhile, three civilians were shot by unknown assailants while passing through the vicinity of the town of Ain al-Krum in western Hama, resulting in the death of two of them and the injury of a woman who was with them. According to Syrian television, the Internal Security Directorate began investigating the incident immediately after receiving the report, in an attempt to identify the perpetrators and understand the background of the crime.
The Hama governorate reported that the woman was transferred to the national hospital in al-Suqaylabiyah for treatment.
On another note, while Jordan's Minister of Interior Mazen al-Farayah announced the voluntary return of about 97,000 Syrian refugees from Jordan to their country since the beginning of this year, the Syrian General Authority for Land and Maritime Ports announced the adoption of a new mechanism to facilitate the crossing of Syrian expatriates from various countries around the world, excluding Turkey, into Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, following several coordination sessions with the Turkish side.
The authority set next Thursday as the date to start implementing the new mechanism, which requires those wishing to enter or leave to submit a prior crossing permit request through the designated electronic link.
