The Turkish authorities arrested today (Saturday) 3 mayors from the country's main opposition party, according to the public prosecutor's office.
The Istanbul public prosecutor's office stated in a statement that it was decided to detain the mayors of the two major cities of Adana and Adiyaman on charges of illicit gain, in addition to 8 others.
For its part, the "NTV" television channel reported that the mayor of Antalya and the deputy mayor of the Büyükçekmece district in Istanbul were also detained as part of a broader investigation that has included hundreds of members of the Republican People's Party, including 11 former mayors, since October of last year.
It is worth noting that the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was imprisoned last March pending a trial on corruption charges that he denies.
