The Syrian Ministry of Health announced today (Sunday) the death of 15 people and the injury of 53 others in the terrorist attack that targeted St. Elias Church in the Douala area of Damascus, confirming that the ISIS terrorist organization is behind the attack.
The ministry stated: "A suicide bomber affiliated with the ISIS terrorist organization entered St. Elias Church in the Douala neighborhood of the capital, Damascus, opened fire, and then detonated himself using an explosive vest," while the Syrian Civil Defense reported that the initial toll indicates more than 15 dead and several wounded.
It pointed out that its teams continue to transport the bodies and secure the explosion site, while the Syrian Ministry of Interior confirmed that a suicide bomber affiliated with ISIS carried out the attack, explaining that he entered the church, opened fire, and then detonated himself using an explosive vest.
The ministry indicated that security units cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence to uncover the circumstances of the attack, while the head of internal security in Damascus, Brigadier General Osama Muhammad Khair Atika, went to the explosion site to follow up on the investigations. However, a security official stated in press remarks that elements and remnants of the previous regime are behind the church explosion.
The security official clarified that security forces imposed a cordon around the Douala neighborhood and began an investigation into the incident, indicating that the explosion occurred while worshippers were inside the church.
Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mustafa stated: "We strongly condemn the terrorist explosion that targeted a church in Douala, Damascus, and we affirm the state's commitment to make every effort to combat criminal organizations, ensure the safety of citizens, and protect society from any attacks that threaten its safety and maintain civil peace."
He added: "We will not back down from our commitment to equal citizenship, which seeks to build a homeland characterized by security and stability." Meanwhile, Damascus Governor Maher Marwan described the attack, which resulted in loss of life and property, as "a blatant assault on the security of citizens and the safety of the homeland."
Marwan vowed to uncover the circumstances, pursue the perpetrators, and bring them to justice to receive their fair punishment, indicating that the governorate will follow up on the incident with determination, in cooperation with all relevant agencies, until justice is served and the harshest penalties are imposed on anyone who participated in, planned, or orchestrated this criminal act.
The residents of the governorate called for cooperation with security agencies and providing any information that contributes to uncovering the truths.
Syrian television reported from eyewitnesses who were inside the church at the moment of the attack that two armed individuals opened fire on the worshippers before one of them detonated himself.
St. Elias Church is located alongside several other churches in the Douala neighborhood, which is predominantly inhabited by followers of the Christian faith. This explosion marks the first bombing targeting a place of worship since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on December 8 of last year.
