أكد رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، أن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب من المتوقع أن يدعم اتفاقية «أوكوس» الدفاعية بمليارات الجنيهات، على الرغم من إجراء مراجعة أمريكية للاتفاقية التي تهدف إلى تزويد أستراليا بغواصات تعمل بالطاقة النووية.
وتُعد هذه الاتفاقية، التي وقّعتها أستراليا والمملكة المتحدة والولايات المتحدة في 2021، خطوة إستراتيجية لتطوير جيل جديد من الغواصات الهجومية النووية، إضافة إلى التعاون في مجالات التكنولوجيا الدفاعية المتقدمة.
وفق صحيفة «Mirror»، أوضح ستارمر، في تصريحاته، أن الاتفاقية ذات أهمية كبيرة، مؤكداً التزام المملكة المتحدة الكامل بها.
وأشار إلى أن مراجعة الاتفاقية من قبل إدارة ترمب ليست أمراً غير مألوف، معبراً عن ثقته بأن الاتفاق سيستمر في التقدم.
وتشمل الاتفاقية أيضاً شراء أستراليا ثلاث غواصات من طراز «فيرجينيا» من الولايات المتحدة كجزء من المرحلة الانتقالية قبل بناء الغواصات الجديدة.
من جانبه، وصف وزير الأعمال البريطاني جوناثان رينولدز الاتفاقية بأنها شراكة من الدرجة الأولى، مشيراً إلى أنها تعزز التعاون الدفاعي والصناعي بين الدول الثلاث.
وأعرب عن تفاؤله بأن المراجعة الأمريكية ستؤكد قوة الاتفاقية وأهميتها الإستراتيجية.
جدير بالذكر أنه تم توقيع اتفاقية «أوكوس» لأول مرة في عهد رئيس الوزراء البريطاني السابق بوريس جونسون والرئيس الأمريكي السابق جو بايدن.
وأثارت تقارير الأسبوع الماضي مخاوف من إمكانية انسحاب الولايات المتحدة من الاتفاقية بسبب سياسة ترمب «أمريكا أولاً».
ويهدف التعاون إلى تعزيز الأمن في منطقة المحيطين الهندي والهادئ من خلال تطوير قدرات دفاعية متقدمة.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to support the multibillion-pound defense agreement "AUKUS," despite a U.S. review of the deal aimed at providing Australia with nuclear-powered submarines.
This agreement, signed by Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States in 2021, is a strategic step toward developing a new generation of nuclear attack submarines, in addition to cooperation in advanced defense technology.
According to the Mirror newspaper, Starmer clarified in his statements that the agreement is of great importance, affirming the United Kingdom's full commitment to it.
He noted that the review of the agreement by the Trump administration is not unusual, expressing confidence that the deal will continue to progress.
The agreement also includes Australia purchasing three Virginia-class submarines from the United States as part of the transitional phase before building the new submarines.
For his part, British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds described the agreement as a first-class partnership, pointing out that it enhances defense and industrial cooperation among the three countries.
He expressed optimism that the U.S. review will reaffirm the strength and strategic importance of the agreement.
It is worth noting that the "AUKUS" agreement was first signed during the tenure of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Reports last week raised concerns about the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the agreement due to Trump's "America First" policy.
The cooperation aims to enhance security in the Indo-Pacific region by developing advanced defense capabilities.
