بعدما أمضى مكتب صغير في البنتاغون عدة أشهر في التحقيق في نظريات المؤامرة حول برامج واشنطن السرية للأجسام الطائرة المجهولة، كشفت حقيقة صادمة، إذ بين التحقيق أن واحدة على الأقل من تلك النظريات كانت مدعومة وروجت من قبل البنتاغون نفسه، وفق ما أفادت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال».
وفي التفاصيل، أعاد التحقيق، الذي أمر به الكونغرس، المحققين إلى ثمانينيات القرن الماضي، عندما زار عقيد في سلاح الجو حانة بالقرب من المنطقة 51، وهي موقع سري للغاية في صحراء نيفادا.
فأعطى مالك الحانة صورًا لما يُحتمل أنها أطباق طائرة. وعُلّقت تلك الصور على الجدران، لتنتشر لاحقا موجة من الأساطير المحلية حول فكرة أن الجيش الأمريكي كان يختبر سرًا تكنولوجيا فضائية.
فيما قام الجيش بتلفيق أدلة على وجود تكنولوجيا فضائية، وسمح للشائعات بالتكاثر للتغطية على برامج أسلحة سرية كان يجري العمل عليها حينها، حسب ما بين التحقيق.
لكن في الحقيقة كان العقيد في مهمة تضليل، إذ اعترف الضابط المتقاعد الآن، عام 2023 لمحققي البنتاغون بأن الصور مفبركة.
وأوضح أن العملية برمتها كانت خدعة لإخفاء حقيقة ما كان يحدث في المنطقة 51، حيث كان سلاح الجو يستخدم الموقع لتطوير مقاتلات شبحية سرية للغاية، تُعتبر بمثابة تحدٍّ حاسم ضد الاتحاد السوفيتي آنذاك.
وكان القادة العسكريون قلقين من احتمال انكشاف البرنامج، إذ لمح السكان المحليون، على سبيل المثال، رحلة تجريبية لطائرة الشبح المقاتلة F-117، وهي طائرة تبدو بالفعل من عالم آخر.
إلا أن تلك الحادثة التي تُكشف لأول مرة، كانت مجرد حلقة من سلسلة اكتشافات توصل إليها فريق البنتاغون أثناء تحقيقه في عقود من الادعاءات بإخفاء واشنطن ما تعرفه عن الحياة خارج كوكب الأرض. وقد تُوِّجت هذه الجهود بتقرير أصدرته وزارة الدفاع الأمريكية العام الماضي، خلص إلى أن مزاعم التستر الحكومي حول وجود كائنات فضائية لا أساس لها من الصحة.
إلا أن هذا التقرير أيضا كان بمثابة تستر، لكن ليس بالطريقة التي تُروّج لها نظريات مؤامرة الأجسام المجهولة، وفق تحقيق أجرته صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال».
فقد أغفل الكشف عن الحقيقة الكامنة وراء بعض الأساطير الأساسية حول الأجسام الطائرة المجهولة، والتي عمد البنتاغون نفسه أحيانًا إلى تأجيجها.
وتُمثل هذه النتائج تطورًا جديدًا ومذهلًا في قصة الهوس الثقافي الأمريكي بالأجسام الطائرة المجهولة.
ففي العقود التي أعقبت بثًا إذاعيًا لكتاب «حرب العوالم» لإتش جي ويلز عام 1938، والذي أثار ذعرًا في جميع أنحاء البلاد، ظلت التكهنات حول الزوار الفضائيين حكرًا إلى حد كبير على الصحف الشعبية، وأفلام هوليوود الضخمة.
لكن في الآونة الأخيرة، اتخذت الأمور منعطفًا خطيرًا عندما كشف عدد من مسؤولي البنتاغون السابقين مزاعم بوجود برنامج حكومي لاستغلال تكنولوجيا الكائنات الفضائية وإخفائها عن الأمريكيين، وقد أدت هذه المزاعم إلى فتح البنتاغون تحقيقاً في الأمر.
ليتبين بعد التحقيق وعقود من الغموض أن الحكومة نفسها تورطت في نشر أسطورة الأجسام الطائرة المجهولة منذ خمسينيات القرن العشرين للتضليل وإخفاء مهمات سرية.
ولا يزال المحققون يحاولون تحديد ما إذا كان انتشار المعلومات المضللة هو من فعل القادة والضباط المحليين أم أنه برنامج مؤسسي أكثر مركزية.
يذكر أن البنتاغون أغفل حقائق رئيسية في النسخة العلنية من التقرير الذي أصدره عام 2024، كان من شأنها أن تُسهم في دحض بعض شائعات الأجسام الطائرة المجهولة، وذلك لحماية بعض الملفات السرية وتجنب الإحراج.
فيما ضغطت القوات الجوية تحديدًا لحذف بعض التفاصيل التي اعتقدت أنها قد تُعرّض برامجها السرية للخطر وتُلحق الضرر بمسيرتها المهنية، بحسب الصحيفة الأمريكية.

The bar owner provided photos of what were purportedly flying saucers. Those photos were hung on the walls, leading to a wave of local legends about the idea that the U.S. military was secretly testing space technology.
The military fabricated evidence of the existence of space technology and allowed rumors to proliferate to cover up secret weapons programs that were being worked on at the time, according to the investigation.
But in reality, the colonel was on a disinformation mission, as the now-retired officer admitted in 2023 to Pentagon investigators that the photos were fabricated.
He explained that the entire operation was a ruse to conceal the truth about what was happening at Area 51, where the Air Force was using the site to develop highly secretive stealth fighters, which were considered a critical challenge against the Soviet Union at the time.
Military leaders were concerned about the possibility of the program being exposed, as local residents, for example, caught a glimpse of a test flight of the F-117 stealth fighter, which indeed looked like it was from another world.
However, this incident, revealed for the first time, was just one link in a chain of discoveries made by the Pentagon team while investigating decades of claims that Washington was hiding what it knows about extraterrestrial life. These efforts culminated in a report released by the U.S. Department of Defense last year, concluding that government cover-up claims regarding the existence of extraterrestrial beings were unfounded.
However, this report was also a cover-up, but not in the way that conspiracy theories about unidentified flying objects promote, according to an investigation by the Wall Street Journal.
The revelation overlooked the hidden truth behind some of the core myths about unidentified flying objects, which the Pentagon itself sometimes fueled.
These findings represent a new and astonishing development in the story of American cultural obsession with unidentified flying objects.
In the decades following the radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" in 1938, which caused panic across the country, speculation about extraterrestrial visitors remained largely confined to tabloid newspapers and blockbuster Hollywood films.
But recently, things took a serious turn when several former Pentagon officials revealed claims of a government program to exploit and hide extraterrestrial technology from Americans, leading the Pentagon to open an investigation into the matter.
