Hamas is expected to provide a written response today (Saturday) to the proposal from U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff regarding a ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas reported that it has conducted "national and leadership consultations" regarding the U.S. proposal.

Hamas announced yesterday (Friday) that it is holding consultations with Palestinian forces and factions regarding the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire. The movement stated in a brief message via the "Telegram" app that it received the proposal from Witkoff recently through intermediaries.

Hamas has not disclosed the details of the proposal so far, while regional and international parties continue their efforts to reach an agreement to end the ongoing war in the sector since October 7, 2023.

For its part, Israel has urged Hamas to accept the U.S. proposal regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and to release the detainees, while U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that a truce in the sector is "very close."

Israel is facing increasing international pressure due to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, while the United Nations emphasizes that what has been allowed to enter is merely a drop in the ocean after a suffocating blockade that has lasted more than two months.

The negotiations to end the war, which has been ongoing for nearly 20 months, have made little progress since Israel resumed its operations in March after a short-term truce.

The White House announced the day before yesterday (Thursday) that Israel agreed to a new U.S. proposal regarding a ceasefire, but Hamas stated at that time that the proposal "does not respond" to any of its demands. A source close to Hamas expressed regret over the lack of guarantees regarding the continuation of discussions during the truce aimed at reaching a permanent ceasefire.
