A Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives stated that Saudi Arabia and India are the most vital and important countries for American interests over the next decade, especially in light of the intense geopolitical competition against Western rivals. Republican Congressman Mike Lawler (from New York) said, "If you look at the threats posed by China, Iran, Russia, North Korea, and the unholy alliances formed by those powers, you will find that Saudi Arabia and India are the most vital for American national security." He added, "Saudi Arabia and India are critically important when it comes to establishing peace and spreading prosperity in the world." Lawler is one of the strongest Republican voices on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The American newspaper "Politico" considered Lawler's statements to reflect the Republican Party's trend towards rapprochement with rising powers in the Middle East and the Indian and Pacific Oceans, positioning Saudi Arabia and India as a barrier to protect the United States from the growing cooperation between China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Lawler said, "If you want stability, you need closer relationships with some of our partners." He added, "Strengthening economic relations between the United States, Saudi Arabia, and India will lead to stronger military ties with them. This is crucial." Lawler chairs the subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
