انتخب المؤتمر العام للوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية في دورته الحالية الـ69 المنعقدة في فيينا، المملكة العربية السعودية، لتصبح عضوا في مجلس محافظي الوكالة ضمن الدول الأعضاء في المجلس بدورته القادمة حتى العام 2027م.
ويُعد مجلس محافظي الوكالة الذي يتكون من 35 عضوا أحد أهم أدوات اتخاذ القرارات في الوكالة، خصوصا فيما يتعلق ببعض القضايا الحساسة، مثل الضمانات، التي تندرج ضمن مسؤوليات الوكالة في التحقق من سلمية أنشطة الدول الأطراف في معاهدة عدم الانتشار، كما يدرس البيانات المالية للوكالة وبرنامجها وميزانيتها، ويقدِّم توصيات إلى المؤتمر العام بشأنها.
تجدر الإشارة إلى أن المرة الأخيرة التي شغلت المملكة مقعداً في مجلس المحافظين هي خلال الفترة 2022م إلى 2024م، كما يأتي انتخاب المملكة لعضوية المجلس تأكيداً لثقة المجتمع الدولي في الدور الفعال والبناء للمملكة، وسعيها المستمر لتعزيز التعاون الدولي الرامي إلى توجيه الطاقة الذرية إلى خدمة التنمية والسلام العالميين.
The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in its current 69th session held in Vienna, has elected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to become a member of the Agency's Board of Governors for the upcoming term until the year 2027.
The Board of Governors, which consists of 35 members, is one of the most important decision-making bodies within the Agency, particularly concerning sensitive issues such as safeguards, which fall under the Agency's responsibilities to verify the peaceful nature of the activities of the states parties to the Non-Proliferation Treaty. It also reviews the Agency's financial data, programs, and budget, and provides recommendations to the General Conference regarding these matters.
It is noteworthy that the last time the Kingdom held a seat on the Board of Governors was during the period from 2022 to 2024. The election of the Kingdom to the Board confirms the international community's confidence in its effective and constructive role, as well as its ongoing efforts to enhance international cooperation aimed at directing nuclear energy towards serving development and global peace.
