Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital – Jeddah has achieved a new milestone in the field of advanced robotic surgeries, following the successful operation led by Dr. Muteb Alzaidi, a consultant in thoracic, esophageal, and gastric surgeries, who performed an esophagectomy and the upper part of the stomach using the Ivor Lewis technique with the da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.
The operation was performed on a 70-year-old patient suffering from chronic diseases, after being diagnosed with cancer at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. The Ivor Lewis procedure is considered a complex surgery performed in two stages during the same operation, involving both the abdominal and thoracic regions, and requires a high level of surgical precision and coordination among various medical specialties.
In the first stage, the surgical team performed the operation robotically through the abdomen, where the stomach was freed and the upper part was removed, preparing the section used to reconstruct the digestive tract, along with the removal of surrounding lymph nodes. After that, the patient's position was changed to complete the second stage robotically through the right side of the chest, which involved precisely freeing the esophagus from the surrounding tissues and vital structures, removing lymph nodes, pulling the stomach into the chest, and creating the new connection between the upper part of the esophagus and the stomach in the thoracic cavity.
Thanks to God, the patient reached a good stage of recovery after this major surgery and was able to leave the hospital and return home in good health within just one week of the operation.
This success represents an important milestone in the journey of the robotic thoracic surgery program at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital – Jeddah, as well as a significant step towards continuing the expansion of thoracic, esophageal, and gastric surgeries using robotic techniques.
According to the da Vinci database, this case is the second robotic esophagectomy with stomach pull-up to the chest area performed in the private healthcare sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Muteb Alzaidi, included Dr. Ihab Munshi, who participated as a primary assistant in supporting the surgery during the stages of the operation, and Dr. Abdulrahman Nabil, who contributed to the patient's care and follow-up after the surgery.
Anesthesia, nursing, critical care, and supportive health services teams also played a role in the success of the operation through the integration of various specialties throughout the patient's treatment journey.
Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital – Jeddah continues to enhance its capabilities in specialized surgeries and has received accreditation as a Center of Excellence in robotic surgery from the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). The hospital has also achieved a world record by obtaining accreditation for 14 Centers of Excellence from SRC, the highest number of accredited centers within a single hospital globally.
This achievement reflects what can be accomplished through the combination of specialized medical expertise, advanced surgical techniques, and multidisciplinary collaboration, supporting the ongoing development of the robotic surgery program at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital – Jeddah, and providing advanced surgical options for complex cases.
