The historic city of Jeddah celebrated the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which falls on October 27 each year, under the hashtag "Jeddah: A Historic Voice and Image," evoking the historical and cultural memory it holds, documented through images, films, and audio recordings, preserving the stories of the place and the features of social and architectural life across generations.
The celebration highlights the importance of audiovisual heritage in documenting the transformations that the historic Jeddah has witnessed, preserving details of daily life, from scenes of old markets and heritage buildings to traditional crafts, folk songs, rhythmic traditions, and chants associated with social occasions, reflecting the diversity of cultural heritage and embodying the identity of the place and its human memory.
Photographic documents, audio recordings, and historical films are important sources for understanding the city's development and recalling its lifestyle patterns; their value transcends visual and auditory documentation to convey human experiences and community memory, highlighting the enduring relationship between humans and their environment.
This memory holds special significance in historic Jeddah, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, due to its architectural and heritage landmarks that reflect its historical status as a gateway to the two holy mosques and a hub for trade and cultural exchange over centuries.
The celebration emphasizes the importance of preserving and documenting this heritage, raising awareness of its cultural and historical value, contributing to the safeguarding of audiovisual evidence from extinction, and making it a knowledge source for future generations.
