About 190,000 homes are powered annually by the Al-Hanakiyah (1) photovoltaic solar power plant project, one of the initiatives of the National Renewable Energy Program, which is overseen by the Ministry of Energy, with a production capacity of 1,100 megawatts.
The plant is located south of the Al-Hanakiyah governorate in the Medina region, and it began operations in the summer of 2025. The purchase price of the electricity produced from it is 1.68420 cents per kilowatt-hour, reflecting the competitiveness of renewable energy projects in the Kingdom and their ability to produce electricity at globally competitive prices. This project is part of the Kingdom's efforts to expand the use of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems, and to support the objectives of the liquid fuel displacement program and emissions reduction. It is also one of the projects in the fourth phase of the National Renewable Energy Program.
The project contributes to achieving the targets of Saudi Vision 2030 by raising the contribution of renewable energy and energy storage systems to about 50% of the electricity production mix, thereby supporting the diversification of energy sources and enhancing their security and sustainability.
