The Saudi Water Authority announced the localization of energy recovery device manufacturing, which is one of the strategic products in the desalination industry, by establishing the first factory of its kind globally outside the United States. This specialized technology, which was previously manufactured exclusively in the American market, will be transferred to Saudi Arabia as the first country to host its production outside the United States. This development enhances the desalination industry and increases its capacity to access advanced technologies locally, with production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
Energy Recovery Company is establishing the factory in Saudi Arabia with a production capacity of 2,000 devices annually, covering the estimated local demand of about 1,200 devices per year, achieving local self-sufficiency, while directing 40% of the production to the markets of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Africa, and Asia.
The energy recovery devices contribute to increasing the efficiency of desalination plants and reducing energy consumption and operating costs. Local manufacturing reduces reliance on imports, accelerates their availability to meet the needs of desalination plants, and enhances the reliability of supply chains, supporting the continuity of water production and the regular supply to beneficiaries.
The market opportunities for this industry exceed 547 million riyals, of which about 247 million riyals are in the Saudi market, and about 300 million riyals in the markets of the Middle East and North Africa. This provides a demand base that supports the sustainability of production and expansion in exports.
The project is expected to contribute approximately 137 million riyals to the GDP by 2033 and provide more than 50 direct jobs, with a localization rate in the product's value chains exceeding 80%. It also contributes to knowledge transfer and the development of national capacities specialized in desalination technology manufacturing.
The project resulted from efforts led by the Saudi Water Authority, in cooperation with the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, and the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority, which expedite the completion of the requirements for establishing the factory and transitioning to the production phase.
The project shifts this technology from importation to local manufacturing and export, making the Kingdom a regional hub for the production of energy recovery devices, thereby supporting supply chain security and enhancing the competitiveness of water technology industries.
