انتقد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب رئيس مجلس الاحتياطي الفيدرالي جيروم باول خلال زيارة نادرة للبنك المركزي أمس (الخميس)، تكلفة تجديد مبنيين تاريخيين بالمقر الرئيسي ومطالبًا بخفض أسعار الفائدة.
واختتم ترمب زيارته بقوله إنه لا ينوي إقالة باول خلافًا لما قاله مرارًا.
وقال ترمب للصحفيين بعد الزيارة: «القيام بذلك خطوة كبيرة ولا أعتقد أنها ضرورية».
وفي منشور على منصة تروث سوشيال، كتب ترمب في وقت لاحق عن أعمال التجديد وتكلفتها 2.5 مليار دولار: «نأمل أن يتم الانتهاء منها في أسرع وقت ممكن، التجاوزات في التكلفة كبيرة ولكن، من الناحية الإيجابية، فإن بلدنا في حالة جيدة للغاية ويمكنه تحمل أي شيء».
وطغى التوتر بشكل واضح على حديث الرجلين في موقع مشروع التجديد الضخم لمجلس الاحتياطي، ويمثل تصعيدًا لضغوط البيت الأبيض على البنك المركزي وجهود ترمب لحمل باول على «فعل الشيء الصحيح» بشأن أسعار الفائدة.

President Donald Trump criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell during a rare visit to the central bank yesterday (Thursday), regarding the cost of renovating two historic buildings at the headquarters and calling for a reduction in interest rates.
Trump concluded his visit by stating that he does not intend to fire Powell, contrary to what he has said repeatedly.
Trump told reporters after the visit: "Doing that is a big step and I don't think it's necessary."
In a post on Truth Social, Trump later wrote about the renovation work costing $2.5 billion: "We hope it will be completed as soon as possible; the cost overruns are significant, but on the positive side, our country is in very good shape and can handle anything."
Clearly, tension overshadowed the conversation between the two men at the site of the Federal Reserve's massive renovation project, representing an escalation of the White House's pressure on the central bank and Trump's efforts to urge Powell to "do the right thing" regarding interest rates.
