The Iraqi Ministry of Planning has announced the mandatory application of the Iraqi specification on imported cars, indicating that it will include models from 2025.
The ministry's media office stated in a statement: "The Iraqi specification for cars will be applied mandatorily starting from the beginning of the upcoming year 2026, in a step aimed at organizing vehicle import operations and raising the level of safety and quality in accordance with the requirements of the local market."
Fayyad Al-Dulaimi, the head of the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, explained that the decision comes based on the recommendations of the Diwani Order Committee and the decision of the Economic Ministerial Council to amend the annotation clause in the approved specification for the technical requirements of vehicles.
He pointed out that "the mandatory application will include all imported vehicles starting from models of 2025," noting that "the organization had previously requested to postpone the implementation of the decision to give importers and manufacturers enough time to adapt to the new technical requirements."
He added that "the organization is currently working in coordination with the Gulf Standardization Organization to benefit from its technical expertise and to develop mechanisms for applying the specification in line with the best practices adopted regionally and internationally."
He confirmed that "the application of the specification will include all types of vehicles, except for electric and hybrid vehicles, which are still in the process of preparing specific technical specifications."
He said: "The aim of this step is not to reduce prices - as that is outside the organization's jurisdiction - but rather to organize imports, limit randomness, and protect consumers from vehicles that do not meet the specifications."
