In a revolutionary step that redraws the boundaries of journalism, investigative journalism labs in North Macedonia (IRL), in collaboration with the "OCCRP" network, have succeeded in transforming the literature of corruption files and media war tactics from lengthy investigative texts into narrative cinematic works that have won awards and attracted a new audience.
This unique experience was manifested in the black comedy film "The Bench," adapted from the papers of an investigative journalistic inquiry dating back to 2017. The project's organizers chose to move away from dry narration and delve deeply into family drama and the breakdown of personal bonds between two brothers separated by political polarization and party divisions.
The film delivered a major surprise by winning the Audience Award for Best Film and the Jury's Special Award at the National Short Film Festival, proving the ability of artistic forms to transform complex corruption documents and political files into intense human drama that directly engages with the realities of the street.
This innovative strategy opens up a sustainable investment horizon for independent journalistic institutions to confront funding crises, as the revenues from cinematic distribution and festivals are reinvested to finance upcoming journalistic investigations, alongside the production of a feature film project that sheds light on the intricacies of media deception in the Balkans.
