فازت الكاتبة الهندية والناشطة في مجال حقوق المرأة بانو مشتاق مساء الثلاثاء بجائزة بوكر الأدبية الدولية عن مجموعتها القصصية «هارت لامب» (مصباح القلب) التي تتناول الحياة اليومية لنساء مسلمات في جنوب الهند.
والمجموعة القصصية التي كتبت بالكانادية، اللغة المحلية في جنوب الهند، تروي جوانب من حياة العديد من النساء المسلمات اللواتي يعانين من التوترات الأسرية والمجتمعية.
وهذا أول كتاب باللغة الكانادية يحصل على هذه الجائزة الدولية المرموقة التي تمّ تقديمها في حفل أقيم في لندن مساء الثلاثاء وتبلغ قيمتها 50 ألف جنيه إسترليني (أكثر من 59 ألف يورو) يتم تقاسمها بين المؤلّفة والمترجمة ديبا بهاستي.
ونشرت هذه القصص في الأصل بين عامي 1990 و2023.
وبحسب منظمي الجائزة، فقد تعرض الكتاب للرقابة من جانب الدوائر المحافظة في الهند، وتم تجنبه من قبل الجوائز الأدبية الكبرى في البلاد.
وقالت الكاتبة عند حصولها على الجائزة «أقبل هذا الشرف العظيم ليس كفرد، بل كصوت يقف مع العديد من الآخرين»، واصفة فوزها بأنه لحظة «لا تصدق».
من جانبه قال رئيس لجنة التحكيم ماكس بورتر إن الكتاب «شيء جديد حقا للقراء الناطقين باللغة الإنجليزية، قصص جميلة مليئة بالحياة».
وكان بورتر استبق الإعلان عن فوز مشتاق بالإشادة «بالكتب التي تتحدّى السلطات، من السودان إلى أوكرانيا والصين وإريتريا وإيران وتركيا، في كل مكان».
وجائزة بوكر الدولية هي جائزة أدبية تمنح لكتاب خياليين.
وكانت الجائزة تمنح كل عامين لكنها أصبحت منذ 216 تمنح كل عام.
وفي العام الماضي، فازت ببوكر الدولية الرواية الألمانية «كايروس» للكاتبة جيني إيربنبيك والتي ترجمها مايكل هوفمان.
The Indian writer and women's rights activist Banu Mushtaq won the International Booker Prize on Tuesday evening for her short story collection "Heart Lamp," which explores the daily lives of Muslim women in South India.
The collection, written in Kannada, the local language of South India, narrates aspects of the lives of many Muslim women who face familial and societal tensions.
This is the first book in Kannada to receive this prestigious international award, which was presented at a ceremony held in London on Tuesday evening, with a prize value of £50,000 (over €59,000) to be shared between the author and translator Deepa Bhasthi.
These stories were originally published between 1990 and 2023.
According to the award organizers, the book has faced censorship from conservative circles in India and has been overlooked by major literary awards in the country.
The author stated upon receiving the award, "I accept this great honor not as an individual, but as a voice standing with many others," describing her win as an "unbelievable" moment.
For his part, the chair of the judging panel, Max Porter, said the book is "something truly new for English-speaking readers, beautiful stories full of life."
Porter had previously praised "books that challenge authorities, from Sudan to Ukraine, China, Eritrea, Iran, and Turkey, everywhere."
The International Booker Prize is a literary award given for fictional books.
It was awarded every two years but has been awarded annually since 2016.
Last year, the International Booker was awarded to the German novel "Cairo" by author Jenny Erpenbeck, translated by Michael Hofmann.
