In the height of his brilliance, Adel Imam chose to disappear. No festivals, no statements, no television appearances, and not even a fleeting appearance to reassure his fans. Since his last work "Valentino" in 2020, it seemed as though the leader had closed the curtain on a long chapter of brilliance, leaving behind a wide audience whispering in confusion: Was that the final scene?
Isolation is not new for great artists, but when it comes to Adel Imam, silence becomes an issue, as he was never an ordinary artist; rather, he was a mirror of his people, a voice of the street, and a sarcastic tongue articulating what is left unsaid. Therefore, his ongoing absence, amidst his family's secrecy about his health status, deeply strikes at our collective feeling that he was something of us... and that his potential departure – if it happens in the shadows – would be like uprooting a tree without a farewell.
Is he consciously choosing his end? Is he refusing to be seen as weak like Omar Sharif did? Or is there wisdom in silence that we do not see? These questions grow heavier each year, as old images intensify, and scenes from "The Terrorist," "The Leader," and "Birds of Darkness" are replayed in an attempt to cling to his presence, even if through the memory of the screen.
Adel Imam, who redefined comedy and transformed it from a fleeting joke into a cultural act, has not left us yet, but the absence is about to become definitive. With each passing day, it seems that silence has written him the final scene, a scene without applause... yet he remains immortal in the memory of generations.
