The joy of the residents and inhabitants of the southern province of Dhahran Al-Janub was not complete with the market and commercial shops project, which was supposed to serve the residents of the area and its villages. The work on it stopped a few months after its launch nearly 10 years ago, despite the completion of part of its construction work, leaving its concrete pillars as witnesses to a long-awaited project that remains unfinished.
The project is located on the main street at the southern entrance of the province and on the international road leading to the Najran region, giving it service and commercial importance for the residents of the southern province and its villages, which number more than 15, in addition to travelers on the international road.
Mohammed Nasser Al-Arair, Abdullah Marai Al-Wad'i, Awad Mohammed Al-Qahtani, Badr Dhafir Al-Wad'i, and Saeed Al-Qadi told "Okaz" that they were optimistic about the project when it was approved, considering it a market that serves the residents of the southern province and its villages, especially since it is the only market in the area. It was planned to include a bakery, groceries, clothing shops, and various essential needs.
They explained that the halt of the project after its implementation began raised questions among the residents, especially after the contractor left the site. They confirmed that they submitted several requests to the municipality of the province and the municipal council at the time to inquire about the reasons for the halt and to demand the completion of the project and the opening of the commercial activities needed by the residents, but the project remained stalled throughout the past years.
The residents called for the completion of the project and the treatment of the site, including paving, creating sidewalks, and installing lighting, due to its location on a main street and in one of the vital entrances to the province. They emphasized that leaving the project as it is does not serve the residents of the area and does not reflect the importance of its location.
Investment Proposal to End the Stalemate
For his part, the chairman of the municipal council in Dhahran Al-Janub for two terms, Awad Ahmed Al-Farhan, emphasized in a statement to "Okaz" the necessity of proposing the project site for investment to end its continuous stalemate for more than 10 years. Al-Farhan explained that the investment site located on the international road (Najran - Dhahran Al-Janub) near the new hospital represents a developmental and economic opportunity for the province, noting that the building has remained in a skeletal form without completion, making it appear abandoned and contributing to the distortion of the visual and urban scene at the southern entrance of the province.
Commercial and Recreational Facility
Al-Farhan, the former chairman of the municipal council, pointed out that there is an official decision issued by the municipal council to allocate the existing facility as a comprehensive commercial and recreational project, denying what is being circulated in community circles about converting the site into a public benefit market or a municipal slaughterhouse, explaining that these proposals do not align with the official decision recorded in the council's minutes.
He indicated that proposing the project for investment according to its commercial and recreational allocation would provide a commercial and recreational facility that serves the residents of the province, in addition to generating financial returns for the municipality and enhancing the revenues of the investment department.
Al-Farhan called on the Dhahran Al-Janub municipality and the region's secretariat to quickly address the effects of the stalemate and to re-propose the site as an investment opportunity through the "Opportunities" platform, allowing investors to complete the construction of the existing facility and transform the site from a stalled project into a commercial and urban front at the southern entrance of the province.
