The world is experiencing an unprecedented educational revolution, driven by rapid transformations led by artificial intelligence technologies. The student will no longer be just a recipient of information; instead, they will become the center of the educational process in light of what is known as "personalized learning," which carries the promise of a cognitive revolution that will reshape traditional concepts of education.
Personalized learning relies on intelligent systems capable of understanding the student's abilities, needs, thinking style, and the optimal way to learn. Consequently, educational content is designed specifically for each student instead of providing a uniform curriculum for all learners.
Educational artificial intelligence technologies provide a virtual teacher for each student who can understand the appropriate learning style, monitor progress accurately, assess performance, address weaknesses, and focus on strengths. This approach was not feasible on a large scale in the past due to limited technical and human capabilities, but it has become possible through the use of artificial intelligence technologies that enhance personalized education.
Global platforms have emerged to lead this change, including Khan Academy, a non-profit educational platform that offers free content for various subjects. The platform developed the "Khanmigo" tool, which is an intelligent educational assistant that helps students solve problems and explain concepts interactively while providing support to teachers in managing classrooms. The popular language learning app (Duolingo) has benefited from artificial intelligence by customizing lessons for each user based on their language level and progress, allowing it to interact with the student and provide interactive exercises and educational games to improve speaking and listening skills. For higher education, (Anthropic) developed an intelligent assistant named (Claude), which offers a distinctive university educational experience by using the "Socratic method," which focuses on stimulating critical thinking and seeking truths to help students generate ideas and understand better, assisting them in reviewing their lessons interactively and deeply.
The most important question is: Are we ready?
The future compels us to reconsider curricula, the roles of teachers, and the digital infrastructure of schools and universities. The teacher will not disappear; rather, they will transform into a guide and facilitator, while intelligent tools will handle the technical and interactive aspects. Therefore, the Saudi Ministry of Education has adopted a strategic and integrated approach to incorporating artificial intelligence into the educational process, aiming to activate personalized education and achieve the goals of "Vision 2030" in preparing a generation that is technically and intellectually empowered. Among these efforts, the "National Center for E-Learning" issued a comprehensive framework guiding the use of "artificial intelligence" in all stages of education and continuous training. The Ministry of Education has also launched several initiatives in collaboration with "SDAIA" to issue a comprehensive guideline for using "artificial intelligence" technologies, raising awareness among students about the practical applications of artificial intelligence and scientific innovation, and training teachers on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision techniques through in-person and remote training. Investing in digital infrastructure and training educational staff to use artificial intelligence tools is no longer an option but a necessity to ensure the quality of education and keep pace with the technological revolution. The future of education has begun now, and those who prepare for it today will be its creators tomorrow.
