One of the most painful paradoxes in the region is that the state trying to build stability around it and within it is the same one that repeatedly has to defend its borders and security from those surrounding it.
Saudi Arabia, by virtue of its location and weight, has historically not treated its neighbors as a space for dominance but rather as a realm for mutual security. In its repeated official stances, it has consistently emphasized respect for sovereignty, good neighborliness, dialogue, and support for the stability of Arab and Gulf states. This was clearly evident in recent years through its support for the security of those around it, its call for a political solution in Yemen, and its backing of Gulf states in the face of the aggressions they faced.
The problem is that geography alone does not create good neighborliness, and some countries do not view others as partners but rather as competitors or obstacles to a broader project. Here, Saudi Arabia faces a highly complex equation: the more it tries to stabilize its surroundings, the more the turmoil of that environment reflects back on it. Although the stability of the region and a secure Gulf is necessarily a Saudi interest, it is also a mutually beneficial interest for other countries. Thus, the Kingdom's support for these countries cannot always be reduced to merely helping others; it is also a defense of the idea of shared regional security. However, some of those around it do not recognize that interest and do not understand what partnership or responsibility means. The Houthis in Yemen, for example, preferred to commit suicide rather than be partners in regional peace and security!
When ideology, regional ambitions, external influence, or armed groups come into play, the neighbor itself becomes a battleground. At that point, the danger lies not only in the neighboring state but also in the forces that use its territory or crises to exert pressure on other countries. Perhaps the clearest paradox is that even in moments of escalation, Saudi Arabia continues to repeat its call for de-escalation, dialogue, and respect for sovereignty. It calls each time for a return to negotiations and peaceful solutions, and we do not know how many times Saudi Arabia must prove that it only wants its neighbors to be neighbors! At the same time, why do some neighbors still treat good neighborliness as a political opportunity rather than a mutual responsibility?! While we can say that Saudi Arabia can extend its hand to its neighbor, support it, and open the doors to cooperation, in the end, it cannot be responsible for its choices. Neighborliness is a geographical fate, while good neighborliness is a political and moral decision.
Saudi Arabia is not to blame and has the right to act as required by any situation that threatens its borders and security. When your hand is extended to your neighbor while he extends his hand to your adversary, the problem is no longer in the distance between the two houses but in the very meaning of neighborliness itself. If maturity is a blessing that that neighbor has deprived himself of, then you find yourself, out of your sense of responsibility and broad awareness, having to educate him until he understands his limits and knows what reality requires in terms of responsibility in how to act with you.
